Airsoft vs Paintball: Which Should You Try?

Airsoft vs paintball compared: cost of a full day, age limits, kit and booking, from 30 paintball price lists and 43 UK airsoft fields' own websites.

6mm vs .68: Airsoft BBs or paintballs: cost, age and kit compared

On the basics, airsoft vs paintball is close: both are team games played at dedicated sites. Airsoft fires 6 mm plastic BBs from replica guns; players call their own hits. Paintball fires paint-filled balls that mark the hit. Minimum ages are similar. Over a full day, paintball usually costs more - paint is charged by the ball, and active play gets through thousands.

This guide covers how the two games work, what each costs, age limits, kit, booking as an individual, and what UK law says about each. Figures come from 30 paintball price lists and 43 airsoft fields' own websites, checked in October 2026.

How the games differ

Both games run on teams, timed rounds and objectives: capture a flag, hold a zone, eliminate the other side. Our beginner's guide to airsoft covers what a typical game day looks like from arrival to last game.

The main difference in play is how a hit is confirmed. In paintball, the mark does it: a ball breaks on contact and leaves a visible splat. In airsoft there is no mark. Players call their own hits on trust. That is the honour system.

The guns differ too. Airsoft guns are usually replicas of real firearms. Paintball markers are built around a hopper that feeds the balls and a gas or air system that fires them.

Zombie games

Zombie survival games are turning up in both sports, and in our experience they are becoming popular. The basic idea is survivors against zombies. At Ace Combat, "Infected players try to turn the remaining survivors". At paintball.co.uk, the zombies infect survivors by marking them with paint.

Of the 30 paintball price lists we checked, 8 advertise a zombie game as a standing mode or zone. Delta Force and paintball.co.uk both run a "Zombies' Crypt" zone, where survivors look for a cure while the other side blocks their way. Campaign Paintball has a horror-survival zone where players defend a tower and graveyard against the undead. Among the 43 airsoft fields, Ace Combat in Brenchley, Kent lists "Zombie Survival" as a standing game mode, and First & Only runs three-hour zombie survival days at select locations. Fife Wargames lists zombie scenarios as "Coming Soon".

What each costs

Paintball usually costs more over a full day, and it comes down to how paint is sold.

Thirteen of the 30 price lists we checked give an entry-only price with no balls - median £10. Paintballs are charged separately, per 100. The independent venues' median is £8 per 100.

Venues publish daily usage averages of roughly 500-1,000 balls. Those are averages across everyone booked, including shorter sessions and players who stay back. In our experience, a hopper holds about 200 paintballs and most sites run 8-10 games a day. One hopper per game is 1,600-2,000 balls. Play the objectives rather than sitting at the back and you will use 2,000-3,000. At £8 per 100, that is £160-£240 in paint on top of entry.

Bulk deals can reduce that. Hull Paintball sells a 3,000-ball group ticket for £200, which brings the per-ball price down. Always check what the specific venue charges, and look at what ball package is included in any all-in deal before you book.

Airsoft is simpler to price. At the 30 fields that give an all-in hire figure (game fee, gun, mask and BBs), the median is £45.50, with a range of £30-£65. With your own kit the day fee drops to a median of £30 (34 fields, range £15-£37.50). A bag of roughly 5,000 BBs costs about £10-£12.50, so ammunition is not a meaningful day cost.

Age limits

Minimum ages vary, and some venues publish different figures on different pages. Check the booking page for the specific site you plan to visit.

For standard airsoft, the median across the 29 fields that state a minimum (of 34 we checked for our age guide) is 12, with a range of 10 to 16. For standard paintball at independent venues, the median is 11 (15 venues, range 10-16). Chain centres vary more widely: their stated minimums run from 7 to 12 depending on the site and format.

Both sports offer junior and low-impact formats for younger children. Low-impact paintball uses smaller balls fired at lower speed, and venues start it at 6 to 8. The lowest airsoft minimum we found is 10.

Consent rules apply on top of the age minimum. In airsoft, most sites that state a rule require a parent or guardian countersignature for under-18s, and an adult staying on site is the most common threshold for under-16s. Paintball venues split similarly - four of the 19 independents we checked require parental consent or accompaniment for under-18s; six set the threshold at under-16. Check the booking page for the exact rule at your chosen site.

Our guide to how old you have to be to play airsoft covers minimum ages and consent rules in full.

Does one hurt more?

Ask the venues and you get different answers. NPF Bassetts Pole and Velocity Paintball both say paintball carries a slightly higher impact than airsoft. RW Paintball says airsoft "can hurt as much as paintball." Campaign Paintball gives both verdicts on different pages of its own site.

A few airsoft fields say the opposite: that airsoft hurts less than paintball.

So venues disagree, and the clinical evidence does not resolve it. Our guide on whether airsoft hurts covers the medical studies, eye injury data, and what protection both sports require.

Kit and what to wear

Both sports require eye protection on the field, and every hire package that lists its contents includes it.

Paintball packages come with more kit. Coveralls or a combat suit are supplied at 16 of 19 independent venues and all 11 chain price lists we checked. Body armour is included or available at 9 of 19 independents and 8 of 11 chains. A padded neck collar or snood is provided at 8 of the 30 sites.

Airsoft hire includes a gun and eye or face protection at every site that itemises the package. Clothing is included at only 9 of the 43, so most airsoft players bring their own.

Our guide to what to wear for airsoft covers clothing in detail. Most of it - covered skin, sensible footwear, gloves - applies to a paintball day too.

Booking on your own or as a group

Airsoft game days are straightforward for individuals. Per-person tickets are available at 37 of the 43 fields we checked, and some take players who turn up on the day.

Paintball is more varied. Of the 30 price lists we checked, 15 say individuals or small groups can join other players on the day, and a further 4 allow it conditionally - minimum numbers may apply or you may need to wait for space. Four independent venues are group-only. Advance booking is standard across both sports, and some venues need 12-20 players to open on a weekday. It is worth calling ahead before you travel.

A paintball session with a fixed ball package - 300 balls at a set per-head price, for example - works well as a one-off group activity because the total cost is known before you arrive.

Sites that do both

Three of the 43 airsoft fields we list also run paintball: The Mill NI, Area 66 and Black Ops Bristol. If you want to try both sports without travelling to two separate venues, those are the ones to check.

Ten of the 30 paintball price lists we checked also run airsoft skirmish.

The law

Airsoft. Qualifying airsoft guns are not "firearms" in England, Wales and Scotland under s.57A of the Firearms Act 1968. You have to be 18 to buy an imitation firearm, under s.24A of the same Act. Having an imitation firearm in a public place without lawful authority or reasonable excuse is an offence under s.19. Our guides to airsoft law in the UK and BB gun laws cover the rules in full. Northern Ireland has separate firearms law; s.57A does not apply there.

Paintball markers. The position is less clear. The CPS Firearms guidance (updated November 2025) puts paintball guns within the air weapon definition under s.1(3)(b) of the Firearms Act 1968. The Home Office Guide on Firearms Licensing Law, para 2.49, says the majority of paint guns used in adventure games "should not be considered to be firearms". Both are guidance documents, not statute, and they point in different directions. No primary source we found states a minimum age to buy a paintball marker. The UKPSF, which describes itself as the official body for paintball, advises that markers should only be purchased by those aged 18 or over and fired at no more than 300 fps; those are its own guidelines, not law. If you are unsure about your own situation, speak to a solicitor or contact the police.

Which should you try?

No verdict here - the right choice depends on what you want from a session.

  • Playing regularly on your own: most airsoft fields sell individual tickets for their game days.
  • A one-off group event: a paintball session with a fixed ball package gives you a known total cost upfront, which makes group planning easier.
  • Younger children: low-impact paintball formats start at 6 to 8. The lowest airsoft minimum we found is 10.
  • Budget over a full day: airsoft hire is a single all-in price. Paintball costs depend on how many balls your group uses, and active play gets through more than the entry price suggests.

Both sports are best tried at an organised site on your first visit, with the kit supplied. That is the standard starting point.
